WHAT IS THE CORE VALUE YOU OFFER TO CLIENTS?

Building a coherent and engaging storyline out of a tangle of ideas, no matter how thick and knotted.  In all my work with leaders in science, business and politics, this is the one big value that I’ve consistently brought.

WERE YOU ALWAYS GOOD AT SPEAKING AND PRESENTING?

I was TERRIBLE. The first time I spoke in public, I fell off the stage. Yes, I physically tumbled OFF the stage. My family captured it on film and regaled friends and relatives with it for years. As a result, I became such a nervous speaker that every time I did it I got laughed at. It took me years upon years of hard work to overcome the fear. And now I make a living from it. Who’d have known.

WHAT’S THE MOST UNUSUAL JOB YOU’VE DONE?

My previous career was working in war zones. We traveled into towns and communities to talk to people about their situations and how outsiders could best help. So I had to get really good at connecting with strangers and listening to their stories. I suspect that’s why I’m able to capture and structure clients’ ideas effectively.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TV OR MOVIE SPEECH?

Daenerys Targaryen’s speech to the slaves of Meereen in season 4, episode 3 of Game of Thrones. I want to hug whoever it was that wrote this thing. In just two short minutes, you had all the great techniques of public speaking on display - segmenting your audience and targeting the key ones, effective repetition, rule of three, and even the use of props (army, catapults and chains). And it’s not even in a real language!
